Parallax Setting: 100 Yards vs 15 Yards to Infinity — What’s the Difference?

Two scope specifications can look almost identical until you reach one line:

  • Parallax Setting: 100 yards
  • Parallax Setting: 15 yds–∞

That small difference describes two genuinely different approaches to parallax control.

The first normally means the scope leaves the factory with parallax set for one nominal distance. The second normally means the shooter can change the parallax setting across a stated range. That adjustment may be made with a Side Focus dial on the centre tube or an Adjustable Objective (AO) ring at the front of the scope.

This does not automatically make one scope good and the other bad. It tells you how the scope is meant to be used—and whether parallax is something the shooter can adjust or must manage through consistent eye position.

Before handling or adjusting any mounted optic, make sure the firearm is unloaded and follow local laws and safe-range procedures. Never look at the sun through a scope or any other optic.

The short answer

Parallax Setting: 100 yards

Meaning: Factory-set for a nominal 100-yard distance.

User control: No continuous parallax adjustment.

Typical layout: No distance-marked Side Focus dial or AO ring.

Parallax Setting: 15 yds–∞

Meaning: Adjustable from about 15 yards to infinity.

User control: Yes.

Typical layout: A distance-marked Side Focus dial or Adjustable Objective ring.

The wording should still be checked against the product photos and manual. A specification table can be copied incorrectly, and the adjustment layout varies between models.

What parallax actually is

Inside a scope, the target image and the reticle need to appear in the same optical plane. When they do not, moving your eye away from the optical centre can make the reticle appear to move across the target even though the scope and target have not moved.

That apparent movement is parallax error.

It is easy to confuse parallax with ordinary blur because a poor parallax setting can also make the target image look less sharp. The two ideas are related, but sharpness alone is not the complete test. The practical check is to keep the scope steady, move your eye slightly behind the eyepiece and watch whether the reticle appears to shift against the target.

The diopter at the eyepiece has a different job. It focuses the reticle for your eyesight. Side Focus or AO adjusts the target-side optical system so the target image and reticle can be brought into the same plane at the working distance.

What “Parallax Setting: 100 yards” means

On a fixed-parallax scope, the relevant optical elements are set at the factory. If the specification says 100 yards, that is the nominal distance at which the design is intended to minimise parallax.

It does not mean the scope has no parallax at every distance. A fixed optical system can be optimised for only one distance. At substantially shorter or longer distances, apparent reticle movement may become more noticeable when the shooter’s eye is not centred.

This design normally has no distance-marked parallax control for the user. The scope may therefore be simpler to set up: focus the reticle correctly, establish a consistent head position and use the optic within its intended distance range.

Fixed parallax is common on scopes intended for straightforward use at familiar distances. Depending on the complete design, it can also mean fewer external controls, less opportunity to turn the wrong dial and a cleaner profile. Those are practical advantages for a beginner who does not need to focus at very short distances or make fine parallax corrections.

There is an important detail, though: 100 yards is not a universal fixed setting for every scope. Different models may be factory-set for other distances according to their intended use. Read the actual specification rather than assuming every fixed-parallax scope uses the same number.

What “Parallax Setting: 15 yds–∞” means

A range such as 15 yards to infinity normally indicates that parallax is user-adjustable. The shooter can change the position of an internal optical element to suit targets at different distances.

This is a functional difference, not merely another number in the table. The scope needs an external control connected to that focusing mechanism.

The minimum value matters. A scope that adjusts down to approximately 15 yards can be useful when targets are much closer than the fixed setting found on many general-purpose scopes. The infinity mark covers very distant targets rather than a literal measurable endpoint.

Treat the printed yardage marks as starting points. Manufacturing tolerances, eyesight, magnification, temperature and atmospheric conditions can all affect the final position. Set an approximate distance first, then refine the control while checking both target clarity and apparent reticle movement.

Also remember that a low minimum parallax distance is a capability, not proof of optical quality. It says the mechanism has a wider adjustment range. It does not by itself tell you how clear the glass is, how accurate the distance marks are or how repeatable the mechanism will be.

Side Focus and Adjustable Objective are two ways to do the same job

An adjustable-parallax specification does not tell you where the control is located. There are two common layouts.

Side Focus (SF)

Side Focus places a distance-marked dial on the side of the centre tube, usually opposite the windage turret. It is convenient because you can reach it without moving your support hand all the way to the objective bell.

On many scopes, this is the “third knob” beside elevation and windage. Look for yard or metre markings such as 15, 25, 50, 100 and ∞. If the dial has brightness numbers instead, it may control illumination rather than parallax. Some designs combine illumination and parallax in concentric controls, so the exact manual still matters.

Adjustable Objective (AO)

An AO scope moves the parallax control to a rotating ring around the objective bell at the front. It performs the same basic optical task, but it is not a third centre-tube turret.

That distinction is useful when reading photographs. A scope can have adjustable parallax without a Side Focus knob, and an apparent third knob can exist without adjustable parallax if that knob is only an illumination control.

What the difference means when choosing a scope

Neither specification should be judged in isolation. Start with your normal target distance and how much time you want to spend adjusting the optic.

A fixed 100-yard setting may make sense when:

  • most use is around the scope’s intended general-purpose distance;
  • you prefer a simple setup with fewer controls;
  • you normally use moderate magnification;
  • your head position is consistent and the application does not demand close-range precision.

A 15-yards-to-infinity adjustment may make sense when:

  • you regularly work at short and long distances;
  • you use higher magnification, where eye-position errors are easier to notice;
  • close target focus is important;
  • you want to minimise apparent reticle movement at each working distance;
  • you are comfortable adding one more step to the setup routine.

Adjustable parallax can be especially useful for short-distance target work and other situations where a fixed 100-yard setting is far from the actual target distance. A fixed system can still be entirely suitable when its intended distance matches the way the scope will be used.

A simple way to set adjustable parallax

  1. Set the diopter first. Point the unloaded, safely supported setup at a plain bright background away from the sun. Adjust the eyepiece until the reticle is crisp during a quick glance.
  2. Use a stable position. Keep the scope from moving while you evaluate the target image.
  3. Dial the approximate distance. Use the nearest number on the Side Focus or AO scale as a starting point.
  4. Refine the image. Turn the control slowly until the target looks clear.
  5. Check for apparent movement. Without moving the scope, shift your eye slightly up, down, left and right. If the reticle appears to slide across the target, make a small additional adjustment.
  6. Stop when movement is minimised. Do not chase the printed number if the best real setting sits slightly beside it.

You normally repeat this process when the target distance changes enough to matter. Do not keep readjusting the diopter; once it is set for your eye, Side Focus or AO is the control used for target distance and parallax.

Common beginner misunderstandings

“Fixed at 100 yards means parallax-free everywhere”

No. It means the optical system is nominally corrected at that distance. At other distances, consistent eye position becomes more important.

“15 yds–∞ means the scope must have three turrets”

No. A Side Focus model normally adds a centre-tube parallax dial, but an AO model puts the control around the objective bell.

“The third side knob always adjusts parallax”

No. It may control reticle illumination. Read the markings: distance values usually indicate parallax/focus, while numbered brightness levels usually indicate illumination.

“If the target is sharp, parallax is perfectly set”

Not necessarily. Sharpness is helpful, but the better test is whether the reticle appears to move against the target when your eye position changes slightly.

“A 15-yard minimum automatically means a better scope”

No. It means the scope offers a broader adjustment range. Optical resolution, tracking, mechanical consistency and ease of use still need to be judged separately.

Read the parallax line as a design clue

Parallax Setting: 100 yards normally describes a fixed, factory-set design with no continuous user parallax control. Parallax Setting: 15 yds–∞ normally describes an adjustable design using Side Focus or an Adjustable Objective.

That is a meaningful structural and functional difference, but it is not a complete quality ranking. The right choice depends on actual target distance, magnification, required precision and how much adjustment you want to manage.

When comparing specifications, look at three things together: the stated parallax range, the listed focus type and the product photographs. Those clues will tell you whether the scope is fixed, Side Focus or AO—and help prevent you from mistaking an illumination dial for a parallax control.
