The first time you look at a scope with three knobs around the centre tube, it is easy to assume they all do roughly the same job. They do not.
Two of them normally move the point of impact: elevation handles up-and-down correction, while windage handles left-and-right correction. The third knob is the one that causes most confusion. Depending on the model, it may control reticle illumination, parallax, or sometimes combine functions in a way that is specific to that scope.
You do not need to memorise every turret design. Read the markings, understand what one click means and make one deliberate change at a time.
Safety reminder: Before fitting or adjusting a scope, make sure the firearm is unloaded and handled in accordance with local laws and safe-range procedures. Never look at the sun through a scope or any other optic.

Start by identifying the three controls
On most conventional variable-power scopes, the adjustment cluster follows a familiar layout:
- Elevation turret: usually on top of the scope. It moves the point of impact up or down.
- Windage turret: usually on the right side. It moves the point of impact left or right.
- Third side control: often on the left side. It may adjust illumination or parallax, depending on the model.
Do not identify the third knob by its position alone. Look at its scale. A dial marked with brightness levels such as 1–6 or 1–11 is normally an illumination control. A dial marked with distances such as 10, 25, 50, 100 and infinity is normally a side-focus or parallax control. The manual supplied with these images also notes that the third side wheel may serve either purpose on different models.
The power ring near the eyepiece is not one of these three turrets. It changes magnification. The eyepiece or diopter ring is different again: it is used to bring the reticle into sharp focus for your eyesight.
Read the click value before turning anything
Every elevation and windage turret has a click value. This tells you how far one click changes the point of impact at a stated distance.
The turret in the close-up photo is clearly marked 1 CLICK = 1/2 MOA. The generic owner’s manual, however, describes another adjustment system that moves the point of impact by approximately 1/4 inch at 100 yards. Those are not interchangeable instructions. When the marking on the actual turret and a generic manual differ, use the specification for the exact scope in front of you.

One minute of angle, or MOA, spans about 1.047 inches at 100 yards. For practical range work, shooters often round that to one inch. A 1/2-MOA turret therefore moves the point of impact by roughly:

The distance matters. One click on a 1/2-MOA turret does not move the impact half an inch at every range; the angular change stays the same while the linear movement grows with distance.
Some scopes use MRAD rather than MOA, and a few use inch-per-hundred-yard markings. Always check the unit before doing the maths.
Knob one: elevation
The top turret controls vertical correction. If the centre of your shot group is below the intended point of aim, turn the turret in the direction marked UP. If the group is high, move in the opposite direction.
Most turret arrows describe the direction in which the point of impact will move, not the direction in which the reticle appears to move. That is the usual convention, but it is worth checking the exact manual before relying on it.
For example, imagine the centre of a group is about two inches low at 100 yards and the turret is 1/2 MOA per click. Two inches is close to four half-MOA clicks at that distance, so four clicks in the UP direction is a sensible first correction. Fire another group and judge its centre rather than chasing individual holes.
If the turret has a locking collar or is marked LOCK, release it in the way specified by the manufacturer before turning the scale, then lock it gently when finished. Do not force a locked turret.
Knob two: windage
The windage turret works the same way on the horizontal axis. If the group centre is to the right of the aiming point, use the direction that moves impact left. If the group is left, move impact right.
Suppose a group is about 1.5 inches right at 100 yards and the scope uses 1/2-MOA clicks. Three clicks towards the left should bring the next group close to centre. It may not be perfect because group size, wind and shooter input all introduce variation, which is why the next step is always another group rather than an assumption that the first correction finished the job.
Windage is for establishing and maintaining the scope’s zero. It should not become a substitute for understanding changing wind conditions. A calm-day zero gives you a useful baseline; temporary conditions can then be handled according to your normal range method.

Knob three: illumination or parallax?
This is where beginners most often turn the wrong control.
If the dial has brightness numbers
It is probably the reticle illumination control. Turn it only high enough for the illuminated part of the reticle to remain visible against the background. In low light, an excessively bright setting can bloom, cover fine detail and make the sight picture feel worse rather than better.
Illumination does not focus the image, change magnification or move the zero. Switch it off when the scope is not in use. The supplied manual mentions common 3-volt coin cells such as CR1620 or CR2032, with the positive side facing upward, but battery type and orientation must be confirmed for the exact model before replacement.
If the dial has distance markings
It is probably a side-focus or parallax control. Aim at the target, set the approximate distance, and then refine the adjustment while moving your eye slightly behind the scope. The goal is a sharp target image with as little apparent movement as possible between the reticle and the target when your eye position shifts.
Treat the printed distance as a starting point rather than a laboratory measurement. Eyesight, target contrast, magnification and atmospheric conditions can all affect the final setting.
The diopter at the eyepiece has a different job. Set it so the reticle itself looks crisp during a quick glance at a plain bright background, while keeping well away from the sun. Once set for your eyesight, it normally needs little adjustment. Use the parallax control for target distance; do not keep changing the diopter to refocus every target.
A simple zeroing routine that avoids wasted clicks
The manual uses 100 yards as its example, but 100 yards is not a universal starting distance. Use a safe range and the distance recommended for your optic and intended zero. Many beginners first confirm that shots are on paper at a shorter distance before moving to the final zero distance.
- Check the setup. Confirm the optic is mounted securely, with comfortable eye relief and a level reticle. Do not overtighten the rings or turret parts.
- Use a stable position. A supported bench position reduces movement and makes the result easier to interpret.
- Fire a small group. Three shots usually tell you more than one. Adjust from the centre of the group, not from the last hole.
- Measure the error. Note how far the group centre is high or low and left or right.
- Convert the measurement into clicks. Use the actual click value printed on the scope and the distance at which you fired.
- Adjust one axis carefully. Count the clicks aloud or record them. Then adjust the other axis.
- Fire another group. Confirm the result and repeat with smaller corrections if necessary.
- Finish the turret setup. Refit protective caps or engage the locks. Resetting the numbered scale to zero is useful only if the manufacturer says that turret supports it.
Do not loosen the centre screw simply because you have seen someone do it on another scope. On some models it resets the scale; on others it may release parts of the turret assembly. Follow the exact instructions for the model.
Common beginner mistakes
- Mixing up the click value. A 1/2-MOA turret needs half as many clicks as a 1/4-MOA turret for roughly the same correction.
- Adjusting from one shot. One shot can be an outlier. Use the centre of a group.
- Turning the third knob without reading it. Brightness numbers and distance numbers indicate different functions.
- Using high illumination in dim conditions. More brightness can make the reticle less precise.
- Confusing diopter focus with parallax. One focuses the reticle for your eye; the other addresses target focus and apparent reticle movement at distance.
- Forcing a lockable turret. Unlock it first and avoid excessive torque.
- Changing several things at once. If the mount, eye position, magnification and turrets all change together, it becomes difficult to identify the cause of a problem.
- Expecting perfect agreement with a generic manual. The markings on the actual scope and its model-specific documentation take priority.
The three knobs become simple once each has one job
Elevation corrects vertical impact. Windage corrects horizontal impact. The third knob either controls illumination or helps manage parallax, depending on its markings and the scope design.
Read the unit, calculate for the actual distance, adjust from the centre of a group and confirm the result. Once each knob has a clearly defined job, zeroing becomes a measured, repeatable process rather than trial and error.
