A low-power variable optic should remain fast at 1× while providing enough magnification for clear identification and precise aiming at distance. The best zoom range is not always the largest number.
1–6×: simple and forgiving
A well-designed 1–6× usually offers a broad field of view, comfortable eye position and lower weight. It is a strong choice when speed and straightforward operation matter more than maximum magnification.
1–8×: balanced versatility
A 1–8× adds useful top-end detail while preserving a practical low setting. Compare the eye box and image quality at 8× rather than judging the specification alone.
1–10×: maximum working range
A 1–10× can cover fast low-power viewing and more deliberate precision. The extra magnification is valuable only if clarity, reticle visibility and eye position remain manageable at 10×.
